Day off . Bleeding session
I couldn't remember when was the last time I saw the sun? The non-stop heavy rain finally caused flood in Kuching (includes the shortcut to my working place).
"hey, just want to let you know that I can't go to lab today because of the flood. So.... take a day off. bye bye!"
"......."
Hmm... tomorrow is Tuesday, the farm might send in chicks for tests again. I am still not good in taking blood. Out of ten, there will be two or three killed in bleeding session. The chick struggles hard and causes the needle penetrate through its heart and then its liver or lung.
I remembered the first day I do blood collection, it was a mess. I learn the way the senior assistant holding the chicks and slowly I penetrate the needle into the pity little chick's heart to get the blood.
"What happen to the chick?"
"Oh, it's dead!"
"DEAD?!!" (For the first time in my life, I killed a Chick! I was holding a dead chick!) "Anyway, is the blood enough for ELISA?"
Soon after the bleeding session, I have to kill and dissect the chosen chicks in order to take their organs for bacterial examination.
"Nah, sulin, break the chick's neck using the scissors. You've to do it fast and break the neck completely or the chicks will suffer. . ."
I did not do it well. After seeing me spending an hour to kill and dissect the first chick, he spoke to me again...
"Okay la, this time I help you to do. If not, you will still be standing here until tomorrow morning."
Two weeks ago, I was asked to take the goat blood. Sigh...I still cannot handle the little chick well, how can I take the blood from a huge goat?
"Before we start, do you know what is the brick-like thing?"

"Ha!! Are you serious? (Of course I'm not.) It's SALT (sodium chloride) which is essential in goat's diet."

The second week of working
Since the phone has to be switched off in the office, I can't call anyone when i'm working! My boss informed us that, if we cannot stop from checking missed call or sms, he will propose "NO HANDPHONE" in office in the future (Oh, I can't survive without handphone! I... I... need to call my honey at lunch time ...).
Yesterday, I was "fortunate" enough to witness a case at litigation department as I was called to translate a short document. According to my colleagues, the beautiful young lady sued her mother-in-law on the financial matter. (But I only saw three old men quarreled with the lady.)
This week appeared to be a tough week. As I began to attend the clients and I didn't know how to answer their questions regarding to the agreement. I'm fortunate enough as my helpful colleagues are always there to help me. I need my Malay colleague to deal with my native clients as I don't know how to speak Iban! Huh, I want to learn Iban!
One of my colleague also told me that, some customers are very rude and would scold us like hell. (Please don't tell me to much, you will scare me off..)
Anyway, it's time for me to face the real world. I believe, I'll be doing alright!
I'm busy again
I was bombarded by the same question on my first day.
"You are a Science graduate, why do you want to work at law firm?"
The boss was worry that i would run away after first day of working (according to him, a business admin graduate run away on her first day of working ), so he kept reminding me to come on the next day. (haha...) At least my first impression to the boss wasn't that bad as to him, Science students are smart, able to think wise and are fast learner. (I..i looked smart only, boss...)
My boss was actually a secondary teacher twenty years ago. He only pursued the law degree in Australia later. Therefore, he likes people who like to read for self-improvement.
Even though the pay is not high for the time being, the boss promised to increase my salary after i've proven him that i can work to reach his requirements. He told me that the company will sponsor the employees to get the law degree if the employees has excellence performance on their work.
I'm still at the learning stage. Everything seemed new to me. Moreover, I still do not know much about my company politics. (My brother told me that, i'll be on the safe path as long as i work more but talk less. But how if i kena scolded? I'm not sure whether i can take it or not? It will be a shame if i cry at office) Hopefully, I'll get used to it after a few months. Wish me luck!
Goodbye Linda!
Linda came a long way from New Zealand to Bintulu with her husband, Ronny. Shell sent the couple here to experience the life in Bintulu for two weeks.
Well, I was busy dealing with documentation every morning when Linda came over for exercises and manicure. Linda must have spent a lot when she was alone. Thus, I drove her to bank for withdrawal. (Actually, she came here with master cardS and visa cardS. Who knows, all the cards turn out to be useless in a small town like Bintulu).
Linda, we did have a great time with you and we wish that you will be always in the pink of health.
My crystal sample
Okay, last post for today. Ha, below was what i've done on ASS members Mount Kinabalu photos with Adobe Photoshop.
I'll soon paste the collage of photo into a mountain-like crystal (If my brother allowed me to do so.) and put it in the shop as sample for customer view (muahaha..).
For those ass members in the photo, you will soon become popular in Bintulu.
(Thank me.)
Tell me if you want me to pay for the royalty..ha...
Should I be...?
Yes, after spending 3 years in USM, i'm now standing at a junction which will lead me to three different future. Should I further study? Should I continue my final year project constructing metagenomic library from Antarctica Soil samples? Who know, I might have the opportunity to go Antarctica and meet my friends (penguins) there.
Or should I start working as a microbiologist? working for people for my entire life? doing the same thing everyday, repeating the same tests in the lab everyday? am I ready to take this responsibility to be a microbiologist? A wrong test will kill the patient and ruin my career as well.
Or staying in my brother's new built company as the GM? If the company is expanding fast, my salary will be increasing too. In the future, I might be their business partner. But there's a risk, how if the company didn't grow as expected? Should I spend my time building up the company? Well, it's surely a time consuming task.
sigh...
Final year project result
It has been a long time since my last post. I was very busy designing name card at the office and attending customers.
"Ms. Chien, I want to change the background color."
"Ms. Chien, what do you think about this?Looked better?"
"ya..ya...Okay fine." (it's better for me if you have you own idea. I don't have to crack my brain to think for you! you tell me what you want and i will put down the design for you.)
Although i was busy, i still have ample time to check my result. I thought I will get an A for my final year project as the examiner told me that I'd done a good job during viva. With the A, it will boost my CGPA. However, I only got an -A. (What a disappointed..) With this, I will not graduate as 1st class honor.. shame of me... sorry to someone, my failure had brought shame to you..oh, I'll not fly to Seremban in August. I don't know how to face someone. woo...
p/s: There's no airport in Seremban. Of course I won't fly there. I'll take the bus from Penang..)
