Yahoo! The viva is over!

Wow! I'm so happy! My viva was finally over and now I'm in Negeri Sembilan again (Am I insane?! muahaha...)

I was expecting there would be a lot of correction that I need to do in my thesis after viva. But, there were only minor mistakes!

This is the picture taken before viva.

I looked professional or not?

Bye, my lovely room mate.. I'll be back with glory!

When I reached the Tutorial Room, my lab mate was presenting his findings. As I expected, (start from the left) Prof. N (My supervisor), Dr. RA and Dr. R were in the room.

I was nervous sitting down there while Hasleen was presenting. She was unlucky as Prof. N was her examiner. Her supervisor, Dr. RA was shaking her head during Q&A session. Oh, if my supervisor also shake his head during my presentation, I'll be very disappointed.
Although I was a bit nervous at the beginning of my presentation, I managed to finish it on time.
Once I finished with the acknowledgement, Dr. R said,

' You used my chemical things but never thank me..'

' Oh, sorry.. I would like to thank Dr. R for ...'

' Oh...It's too late..'

(God! Will this affect my performance?)

Well, neither Dr. R nor Dr. RA was my examiner. My examiner was Dr. Has, whom I never met before. My friends and I were shocked when she came into the tutorial room before my turn.

I was lucky as she only asked me three questions which were quite general.

1. ' I saw you used unculturable and uncultivatable in your thesis, which one is more suitable to describe microorganisms?'

2. 'What did you mean by direct DNA extraction?'

3. ' Can you determine the existence of the microorganisms in the environment by only extracting the DNA from the soil?'

I was still waiting for the next question when she said 'That's all..'

When I was in her room, she told me that, ' You have only minor mistakes in your thesis. I think (you think?) you have done a good job. (Do you mean I deserve an A?) Actually I'm not a professional in your topic, but I'm happy reading your thesis. I've learnt new things from you.
(Really? Do you mean that I am good?)

With that, I went back to my hostel happily.

Yahoo! Seremban, I'm coming again!

I'll Miss ya'..

Another week to go, I'll be going back to Bintulu. I cherish every moment that I've spent in Penang.

The thing that surprise me the most in USM is the park. There are many lizards strolling here and there in the park. I have to be very careful when I jog in the park. I might be dragged into the lake if I stepped on them! No worry, they actually afraid of human. I only had to keep an eye on them when they came up for sunbathing.

Besides the Lizards, there are plenty of delicious food that you can find in the campus.

This mountain-like Ice Kacang is my favourite and it only cost me RM1.

This nasi lemak is the most tasty nasi lemak that i've ever had.

Besides, I'm gonna miss the food in Penang...

Penang steamboat.

The colorful "tan yuan" made of glutinous rice.

The popular Cendol at Penang Road.

Woon Teng's home-made New Year Biscuits!

Besides the food, the double-decker buses are now available in Penang.

And the shuttle buses in the campus. Although I always ended up walking back to my hostel after lecture, the shuttle buses were convenient on rainy days.

Finally my hostel. It is distance away from my school, but it provides the most hygienic environment to the students compare to the other hostels in the campus.

Oh, sayonara!

The Public Speaking Club (U.X.M)

I joined the club to prepare myself for the final year viva. I need to overcome the fear of stage and crowd!!

The members of the club will be assigned six assignments. The member needs to complete the assingments in order to get the certificate of participation.

The interesting part of the club is:

While presenting, there is a timer reminding you if you have exceeded the time.

After presentation, the "AH" counter (calculate how many ah, umm, hmm, oh... and unnecessary conjunctions that you have made) will tell you, " Miss Chien, you have 2 umm's, 18 ah's, and 5 unnecessary "and"...

Next, the grammarian. As the name implies, this person will correct the grammar mistakes from the speech. "Miss Chien, you have few grammar mistakes. Instead of there are some "dog", it is "dogs"..(woo..it wasn't my fault, it's "dogs" in my speech...but..but...I can't pronounce the "s" properly...)

Finally, the evaluator, who will evaluate your performance according to your eye contact, body gesture, voice and speech content. "Well, Miss Chien, you have successfully planted yourself on the ground (no movements....haha....). Besides, try to have proper eye contact with your audience. Your voice is good but try to improve your body gesture, you are not tree...(haha..ha...)

Well, at least i've confidence to stand on the stage (no bad though) after i finishing all the six assignments. If I further study in Penang in the future, I'll join the Penang Toastmaster Club, where I can impove more by doing more assignments.

Life of an ultimate microbiologist in her final year

First let’s take a look at her territory in biotechnology lab. (Even though I’m majoring in microbiology, my final year project has nothing to do with my major. I was given a research related to molecular biology which is a division of biotechnology.)

Well, it’s not easy to be a microbiologist, Meng Seong and I nearly became roasted chicken wings in the lab. A biotech student who operated the autoclave machine without filling distilled water nearly caused an explosion in the lab. Meng Seong and I were culturing the bacteria happily near the autoclave machine!! Fortunately, the postgraduates found out earlier.

I’m not bad though, I nearly burnt myself!! Look at my pity lab coat.. YES, I burnt it when I was spreading the culture at a lamina flow! Phew, it was close! My cultures were all contaminated as I blew out the fire on my lab coat near the culture plate (Foolish!)…

Well, I was not alone in the lab. I have visitors..Ya, they are “Mousey” and “Ratty”. But they were sentenced to death on the charge of larceny (stealing and eating agar plates).

Besides that, I broke my own record by staying awake 26 hours with MC in the lab doing our research a day before we went back for Mid-term break and CNY holiday. MC was amazed as I managed to get the desired genes and clones within the 26 hours. (Thanks God, I went back happily for my holiday.)

Here are some pictures of my seniors, who are positioned in the main lab.

I really appreciate their help during my research. Thank you!

Punishment for leaving me alone

My room mate was quite busy since last week. Okay, I know, this is our final semester. Thus, her “Ke po” + “nothing-to-do” coursemates were busy organizing farewell dinner here and there…Starting at Pizza Hut to Khaleel (a famous mamak), and then Ibu’s Kitchen (That’s why they went there because they are all mummy boys and girls who still need their “IBU” to milk them.)

Besides, the Queensbay shopping mall has become her second home.. Yesterday was the n times she visited that incomplete shopping mall.. She loves the Queensbay so much because there are plenty Japanese restaurants. Well, I don’t like sushi (It’s a food for sissy according to Dan..Actually I hate seaweed! It stinks!)

Gurr... Now, you can at least have an idea on how many days she had left me alone at the hostel. I don’t like to eat alone stupidly at canteen especially DINNER!!

Well, last night, my anger has already exceeded the limit and I decided to punish that little mummy girl who still fancy farewell party like a student of secondary school.

Well, this was her punishment…

(You better not cry, you better not shout, you better not scream, I’m telling you why, Sulin is having her revenge!)

Since she loves to call herself snow white, here I made her dream come true!

I didn't like to go to my school's computer lab due to network problem. Furthermore, some of the computer equipments were old and cannot be used anymore!

But, in this new semester, the school of biological science seemed to realize that it's time for them to change and do something on the computer lab.

The computer lab was closed for two weeks..On the day it reopened..

tata!!!

All the old and heavy monitors were changed to LCD. And the server is better than before.

Now, i begin to like the computer room!
